How does American university differ to English universities - finance?

Posted by admin on December 27th, 2009 and filed under university | 1 Comment »

In England anyone can go to university if they have the grades, money isnt really an issue at all because you can get a loan from the government very easily.

However some friends of mine in America were saying how they couldnt afford to go to university. Why? What do you have to pay? Do you get loans?

I’m only 14 and I’d be grateful if someone could explain this to me a bit more. Thanks!

Yes, I’m aware of the differences, but many Americans don’t realize that U.K. and continental universities do not charge the high fees that ours do.

We have two types of universities/colleges here: public (state supported) and private. The state-supported schools charge relatively low fees for tuition, room, and board, especially to residents of the state in which a given school is located. (Every U.S. state has as least one system of public universities; some have more than one.) However, "low" doesn’t mean free. Even our state-supported schools charge more than U.K. residents would have to pay.

Our private universities and colleges are very, very expensive, costing tens of thousands of dollars each year.

So, how do Americans pay? They apply for financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans. Many of the private schools (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc.) are extremely well-endowed and have a lot of financial aid money available. They give accepted students financial aid packages, which can be extremely generous. That’s how I earned my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Some of them no longer require students to take out loans so that they won’t graduate with high debt burdens.

But getting into these generous schools is often difficult, and attending a less generous school with less financial aid money available can be a real burden on the pocketbook. It can require students to take out very large loans in addition to whatever grants and scholarships they can get and to whatever they and their parents can pay out of pocket. Many people do it, but the loan repayments aren’t easy.

    Does that answer your question?

Do prestigious universities take in account the university where you came from when pursuing a master’s degree?

Posted by admin on December 22nd, 2009 and filed under university universities | 1 Comment »

    I’m talking Oxford,Harvard,Princeton,Columbia,etc.

What if you had an undergraduate degree at a not so special university, do they care?

Your academic performance and the strength of the program are the two most important factors. This means that they want to see that you have done well in a program that will have adequately prepared you for you master’s degree. So the esteem of the school you attended overall does not play a huge role. How they judge the quality of the individual program you completed plays a much more important role. Some ivy’s, for instance, have individual programs that are weak. While a second tier school may have a very thorough program. So your application should highlight the fact that you got good grades in classes that provided preparation for the Master’s you are applying to receive. Hope that helps.

What are my chances of getting into Arizona State University?

Posted by admin on December 22nd, 2009 and filed under university of | 2 Comments »

I’ve heard the acceptance rate is like 90%, but I’m from Alabama and will have 41 credits by the time I want to transfer there in Fall 2010. I have a 3.6 gpa and a 20 on the ACT. I didn’t know if I had less of a chance since I’m out-of-state, or what. What are my chances?

I can nearly guarantee your acceptance with that phenomenal grade point average. I attended University of Missouri and was able to transfer to ASU with only a 3.0 GPA. Don’t worry about getting in; just be concerned with paying for it. Out of state is expensive. I went the financial aid route. After you have lived in the great state of Arizona for a year, apply for in-state tuition. They will look at things like having in-state employment & proving that you reside in AZ with proof you pay rent here. Good luck!

HELP! go to community college, graduate with my associate with a transfer to a university to further my degree?

Posted by admin on December 22nd, 2009 and filed under go to university | 8 Comments »

I am planning on going to Sacramento City Community college to major in Registered Nursing. I want to graduate with my associates but I also want to transfer to a 4 year university to get my bachelors, is that possible? The only reason why I want to graduate with my degree is so I can go straight into the workforce and have the option to go to a university.

Please anyone who can answer would mean so much to me.

    Thank You.

I wanted to do that, too, until I realized that the 2-year degree wastes a lot of time. You can take the test to get licensed after either the 2-year AS degree or the 4-year BS degree. Here’s the catch, though… the 2-year programs usually involve at least a year of prerequisites and then applying to the separate 2-year nursing program, so that’s actually 3+ years. You might as well go for the 4-year BS and take the prerequisites at any community college. You would have to research what those classes would be specifically for whatever nursing program you would be applying to, but generally it’s intro chemistry, lifespan development, microbiology, statistics I & II, A&P I & II, nutrition, intro psych, etc. Once again, the nursing program is always a separate thing that always has to start in the fall, and in sequential order, and they will even tell you to not bother taking general requirement classes at the 4-year school. Don’t rely on advisers to tell you what to do because they will just tell you the general information and follow the general structure, you have to be proactive.

With the way it’s set up, the only reason to bother with the "2-year" degree is if for the safety of perhaps not continuing with school for whatever reason. But that safety costs you a lot of time, work and money….and you are taking practically the same classes that you would be if you were getting the 4-year, except for some electives!
