Nina Perlove, flute lesson 2008 KMEA GMEA Audition mvt 2

    NOTABLE NOTE

I recently received an email from Dr. Charles W. Smith, Professor Emeritus of Western Kentucky University, regarding the printed B on beat 4 in measure 14. In my video, I suggest that you play this note as a B-flat to carry through the B-flat earlier in the measure. Although accidentals typically only carry through the measure for notes in the same octave, many composers will indicate a cautionary accidental to indicate if a subsequent appearance of the pitch should not include the carry-over, even though such an indication is not required. Dr. Smith was curious about this ambiguity in measure 14 and kindly did a little research. This is what he found out: I contacted GMEA and got the name of Mr. Greg Gribble, director of bands at Polk County High School in Georgia. Mr. Gribble says the music was composed five years ago, and questions such as this one always come up. The composer verified five years ago that the note in question is a B-natural.

Thank you for clearing this up, Dr. Smith!
