  • How much roughly would it cost to use a printer at home?

Posted by admin on December 16th, 2009 and filed under university home page |

I always print-out any documents at uni - It costs 5p per page (black and white)… I’m now considering buying a printer/scanner to use at home , as using the university’s printers is getting a bit inconvenient. Plus, I sometimes need to print stuff quite quickly…

So, roughly, how much does it cost per page to print at home, ignoring the price of the printer, but considering say the ink and paper.

    thanks

If you get an average HP laser printer, they can yield from anywhere of 2500 to 5000 pages per cartrdige. The cost is roughly 4 cents a page and you don’t have to pay for transport or taking the bus etc… If you calculate all that, it would be cheaper than 4 cents a page.

Here is a good link… The offijet 6500, wireless. This is actually cheaper to run than the laserjet which would narrow the cost per page down to 2 or 3 cents a page. This all-in-one is very well rated and not expensive to buy.

if you want your cheapest option then i would buy an epson printer this way you can buy cheaper ink from ebay they normally cost around £1 per cartridge so would end up costing around 1p per page that’s including the price of the paper

Probably slightly more than at uni say 10ppp, excluding the initial outlay for the printer. This is an estimate though but wont be much different. All in one printers can be purchased quite cheaply these days. This is based on using genuine ink cartridges. I would not recommend the cheaper versions. It will vary depending on the printer. Also this based on using cheapest possible paper. See this website for estimated page output per cartridge.

Right for a start you say it’s costs you 5p a sheet of A4.

You can by a ream of A4 for about £3 or less so each sheet of paper is only costing you 0.006p.

You can buy an ink jet printer for about £30 or less now. Cartridges are cheaper to buy online.

So depending on how much printing you are doing probably about ½p per page plus the convenience of doing it when you want to.

Especially when you need to print something off a 3am that has got to be in that morning when you have spent all evening down the Student’s Boozer when you should have been working!

If you are just look at black and white, go laser. Your cost per page, should be less then what you are paying no (just make sure to research how much a replacement toner costs and how many pages it is rated for).

If you are planning to buy an inkjet printer, the cost per page will be wearily double to 10 times what you are paying now, depending upon the printer.
